Through  our Wilderness Leadership Program, participants learn how to stretch and make more dramatic adjustments in their diabetes management programs while accommodating for significant changes in exercise. Alumni and their families tell us that participants are better equipped to handle the stresses and changes that occur in their lives after completing this program. While trekking through the wilderness, participants face both physical and mental challenges as a team and with their diabetes. Our Wilderness Leadership Team fully uses the very special, multiple teachable moments available on these trips and provides a powerful learning experience focused on each young person, his or her diabetes, leadership strengths and the environment.

Each year participants hike different trails throughout the New England wilderness.  The group from 2006 hiked a 40 mile section of the Long Trail in Vermont and previous groups have tackled sections of the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  Each year the program leaders change the itinerary and plan to hike a different route than in years previous.

Joslin-trained staff members with extensive experience in wilderness programming, leadership development and diabetes management lead the Wilderness Leadership Program. Staff will include healthcare professionals and Wilderness First Responder certified wilderness leaders.

Additional trip leadership opportunities exist through the Leader-In-Training program which prepares young staff members and previous participants to serve as future wilderness leadership trip leaders.  This is a two-year program.  For more information on this Leader-In-Training program, please contact the Camp Office.
