Sexual Function Clinic
Appointments: (617) 732-2440
Joslin Diabetes Center's Sexual Function Clinic helps patients with impotence or decreased sexual function. These problems occur in up to 50 percent of men with diabetes.
The Clinic will help both people with diabetes and those who do not have diabetes but are having problems with sexual function.
Why Is Sexual Dysfunction Such a Frequent Problem in Men with Diabetes?
The reasons vary, but are related to the complications frequently found in people with diabetes:
- Vascular disease, a frequent diabetes complication, can cause reduced blood flow, which can make attaining or maintaining an erection difficult.
- Neuropathy can cause nerve damage that can affect sexual function.
- Hormonal imbalances, which may be found in people with diabetes, can play a role.
What Are Some Other Causes of Sexual Dysfunction for Both Men Who Have Diabetes and Those Who Don't?
These can include:
- Hormonal imbalances or side effects of certain medications.
- Psychological issues, such as stress, that can frequently cause sexual function problems, especially for those between the ages of 50 and 70.
- Vascular disease, nerve damage or other physical problems not caused by diabetes.
Who Staffs the Sexual Function Clinic?
The clinic is under the medical direction of Kenneth J. Snow, M.D., a staff physician at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. He is board-certified in internal medicine and endocrinology.
Because there are several possible causes for sexual function problems as well as several possible solutions, the Sexual Function Clinic staff provides a thorough assessment of each individual's situation, including appropriate testing, and then develops a treatment program that will best meet the patient's needs. When necessary, referrals to other Joslin specialists or specialists at neighboring institutions are given.
