Harvard Medical School Affiliation:
Joslin is a separate nonprofit entity from Harvard Medical School. Our affiliation, however, provides a collaborative and respected academic, teaching and research relationship.

Assets To Bequeath:
Joslin is best suited to receive cash or property that will ultimately be liquidated by the executor or by the attorney representing the estate. If your client wishes to leave real estate or real property to Joslin, please contact our planned giving staff to discuss. We want to ensure we will be able to accept the property your client wishes to leave and use it to best advance our mission.

Trusteeship:
Joslin does not act as trustee for estates.

General Purpose Bequests:
Joslin appreciates the flexibility of bequests for general and Board-designated purposes. General purpose funding is critical to our long-term ability to operate our clinic, sustain comprehensive services to those living with diabetes, and meet the challenges of the evolution of diabetes treatment and research.

As this disease is already an epidemic, the treatment and basic and clinical research of type 1 and type 2 diabetes will change. Providing funds that allow our staff and board the greatest flexibility to conquer diabetes is especially relevant with the evolving nature of this disease.

Restricted Bequests:
Bequests arranged for a specific purpose such as research or clinical care are possible. Please contact our planned giving to ensure that Joslin may respect your client’s intentions if your client wishes to arrange for a specific use. If you do not do so, Joslin may be obligated to consult the state attorney general to ensure we best follow the decedent’s intentions. On occasion we may have to decline a bequest if we may no longer honor the provisions of the will.

Bequest Funds:
We invest the proceeds from estates in an endowment where our board of trustees may designate its use. Over the years this endowment fund has provided long-term financial stability for the organization, funded the construction of buildings, and helped our clinic cover the costs of providing top-notch comprehensive care of this chronic disease that is largely under-reimbursed by insurance and HMO providers.

Recognition of Benefactors:
Joslin is honored that your client is elevating our institution to the level of family by remembering us in estate plans. Because we have received many bequests over the decades where we have not had an opportunity to thank the donor, we like the opportunity to do so. We also appreciate knowing about future funding that will help us better plan for our work to come.

The Legacy Society:
The
Legacy Society is a special circle of benefactors who have provided for Joslin’s future by naming Joslin in their estate plans or establishing a charitable gift annuity, charitable trust, or pooled fund gift. We honor our legacy benefactors and promote their meaningful gesture by listing their names in our annual report and on a plaque in our clinic foyer. Benefactors may request anonymity. We also provide insider updates on our work and invitations to special events.

We realize that it is your client’s decision to share his or her name with Joslin. We recognize that you act in confidentiality and that your client may change intended bequest plans. We will not burden your client with solicitations or exchange the names and addresses of our bequest benefactors with other organizations. That recognized, please consider encouraging the joyful and humble acknowledgment we may give to your client during his or her lifetime, knowing that he or she is making a difference today for tomorrow’s work.

Thank You:
Thank you for assisting your clients in helping Joslin better prevent, treat, and find a cure for this disease. We are grateful for your professional help, bringing us closer to a cure for diabetes.
